For years I’ve gone to family reunions and other “outdoor parties” that were based on the common “back yard barbeque” concept only to find my host is too busy to spend any time with his or her loved ones and friends because  a “simple barbecue” turned out to be a lot of work!

Sure, there’s a certain amount of fun and distraction in doing the bar-b-q yourself – but is that really what your event is about?

This year why not consider having the best of all worlds by hiring a Vancouver, WA caterer to take charge of the “work” so you can actually enjoy your summer party? DuckTales Kitchen is well known for their formal catering for weddings and business functions in Vancouver WA but they also have what it takes to put on a spectacular backyard barbeque or family picnic.

Let Steve and Jane Waddle help you put on the best family reunion in years. They’ll bring all the equipment and supplies so you can put on the show!

  1. (After sharing enough about your wedding so they know the style…) What types of things would you recommend for this style of wedding?
  2. Does your team specialize in any certain types of food / dishes?
  3. Would you consider special requests if we provided the recipe? (perhaps something that is a tradition in your family)
  4. How many catering commitments do you make on the same day?
  5. Are you licensed? (this means that they have met health department standards and have liability insurance)Do you have a liquor license?
  6. How does the cost-per-person of a buffet compare to that of a sit-down dinner?
  7. Does that cost-per-person just cover the food, or are charges such as staff, rentals, and linens included?
  8. Can you help us with any of the arrangements besides food such as tents and tables? Would this cost me less if I do it myself?
  9. What service costs are included and what costs are additional?
  10. Are set-up and clean-up included?
  11. How much is overtime if the reception runs long?
  12. Are gratuities included?
  13. What color and style of linens, glasses, plates, and accessories are available?
  14. Will you be the person personally handling my wedding on my wedding day? If not, what is the name of the person who will, and when can I meet them?
  15. How much time will you need for set-up and clean-up?
  16. Can you provide a wedding cake, and possibly a grooms cake? If we provide them, do you charge a cake cutting and serving fee?
  17. Do you charge for beverage service?
  18. If we want to provide our own wine, champagne, and liquor, do you charge a corkage fee?
  19. Will you provide food for the photographer, videographer, musicians, and other “day-of” vendors? If so, is there an extra charge?
  20. Will you provide special meals for any children who attend, and is there a discounted charge for them?
  21. Can we see a copy of your standard contract?
  22. What deposit do you require to hold the date, and when will the balance be due?
  23. Can we see pictures of previous events, and speak to former clients for referrals?

If you get a good feeling from the caterer, and think they might be a viable candidate, ask them to draw up an outline of what you discussed, including costs, menu possibilities, and what the fee includes. And don’t forget about that tasting!

At DuckTales Kitchen, we feel each catering client becomes a family member. We cherish the experience and, having been a part of Vancouver, WA for a lifetime, we often know many of your guests. We hope you will give us the opportunity to become a part of your family for your special event.

It was recently brought to my attention that there are some in the Vancouver, WA area that think of catering as something that only “the rich” get involved in. This surprised me because I have found that in Vancouver, WA catering is a very cost effective alternative to the “do it yourself” options. For example, one of my dear friends wanted to put on a surprise birthday party for her husband’s 50th. She started thinking about it almost a year ahead of time, planning what she would like it to look like, how many people she wanted there etc. She even got as far as planning the menu. But as she sat there writing it all out in her notebook it occured to her that she had already spent several hours on the food “ideas” alone and had not even gone shopping for the ingredients yet. Then she said she started looking at all of the “tools” she was going to need to rent or buy (the trays, the warming trays, the dip dishes etc etc). Of course buying was the smartest for value but then there was the issue of storage, since she probably would not haul them out again until his 75th!

Finally she gave in and made a call to my friends Steve &  Jane Waddle at DuckTales Kitchen and ask Jane how much it would really cost to have this event catered. Granted, an event serving almost 100 people is not “cheap” from any angle, however, after she spoke with Jane and Steve about her ideas and needs she called me and told me that she was actually going to save about $600 dollars in estimated costs for supplies and ingredients alone. Then she went on to note that the hours she no longer has to spend preparing and planning the food are worth even more to her.

The thing is, my friend is not “rich” – but she is smart and knows a good value when she sees one. If you are a Vancouver, WA event planner of any level, you owe it to yourself to consider hiring DuckTales Kitchen for your catering needs. You deserve to have a great time at your event!
